Who We Are

The Kismet Cemetery began as a gift of 1.8 acres of land from A. C. and E. E. Olin, husband and wife. Cemetery records and monuments date back to 1909. In 1932, a Quitclaim Deed was issued to the City of Kismet. Guardianship remained with the City for 24 years until a Quitclaim Deed was issued in 1956 to Fargo Township from the City of Kismet. In 1957, a petition was circulated in the community by Arva Handy to form a cemetery taxing district. Patrons of Fargo Township met at the Kismet High School to organize the district as it is currently held. A five-person Board of Directors was elected with the name Kismet Cemetery District being approved and adopted. Original Board Members included Jack Massoni, Arva Handy, Brice Sherer, Earl Prater, and Lawrence Thompson.

Many improvements have been made to the Cemetery over the years. In 1967, a Veterans Memorial was added to honor the servicemen who have given their lives for our country.

In December of 1971, 2.2 acres were purchased from Vernon and Doris Miller to increase the size of the cemetery on the north end.

The addition of a sprinkler system was a great help in times of drought. Grass was sown and many trees and shrubs were added. In May of 2003, a torrential rain and devastating hail storm came thru the area and destroyed many of the trees and shrubs that had previously been added, as well as causing other damage to the Cemetery.

Memorials from the family and friends of Eric Greenwood were given in his honor for the purpose of constructing a Gazebo, which was completed in 2002. Eric and Peggy were former Caretakers and Board Members of the cemetery. Peggy said using the memorials to construct a Gazebo was a family decision, as Eric always thought there should be a place for visitors to come and reflect on past times with loved ones. Crystal Coffey donated the lot for the gazebo to be placed upon.

Curbing was added in 2010 along with a structure to house a Directory at the middle entrance to the cemetery.

The Cemetery continues to operate with a five-person Board of Directors and employs the services of one Caretaker. Past Board Members in addition to those mentioned above include John Massoni, Harold Lambert, Francis Ormiston, Ernest McVey, John Bruner, Lola McVey, Howard “Bud” Denton, Eric Greenwood, Peggy Greenwood, Joe Dreitz, Jeff Headrick, Dee Dee Deacon, and Ryan McVey. Past Caretakers include John and Geneva Bruner, Eric and Peggy Greenwood, Dawn Jennings, and Brenda and Rick Rice.
